Historically Black College and University Facts
  • Founded in 1873 in Greensboro, North Carolina, Bennett College is one of the US's only two historically black colleges exclusively for women.


  • Wiley College was the first historically Black college west of the Mississippi.


  • Morehouse College, a private historically black liberal arts college for men, counts Martin Luther King, Jr, Samuel L. Jackson and Spike Lee among its alumni.


  • In 2007, nursing graduates from Dillard University in New Orleans earned a 100 percent pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses, and graduates of Dillard's Division of Educational and Psychological Studies earned a 100 percent pass rate on the PRAXIS Exam.


  • Claflin University, founded in 1869 as Claflin College, is the oldest HBCU in South Carolina, and was the first college in the state to welcome all students regardless of race or gender.
